Abstract

It is widely argued that the quality of the education that students are receiving in Spain has plummeted over the last years. However, one can wonder whether this statement is based on real facts or, quite on the contrary, we are faced with subjective opinions infuenced by a certain nostalgia of the “good old times”. This paper aims at discussing what can the reasons for these assertions be, and whether they can be dismantled with a number of arguments. To do so, the results obtained by Spanish students at PISA the last few years will be analysed, before refecting on the development of competences and the advances achieved over the last two decades as far as the dropout rate is concerned. Finally, a refection will be carried out about the role the inspection of education can play in improving the quality of education as well as in carrying out a teaching efort to convey the nature of those improvements, so as they can be seen as such by the whole educational community.
