Abstract

The OECD’s work on education contributes to its mission of promoting policies that improve economic and social welfare. Its reports and proposals are based on the collection and analysis of data to propose solutions to social, economic and environmental challenges that lead to the establishment of international directives and standards.
Mitigating the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic has become the main challenge in all areas. This paper addresses the relationship between the effects on education and the economic effects on individuals and countries and outlines suggestions for the development of compensatory education policies. While it clearly explains that how school closures will affect the future development of the affected student body cannot be fully predicted, it is based on previous research on the relationship between schooling and learning outcomes and subsequent employment opportunities for individuals and the economic development of countries. The report concludes that the economic effects of school closures due to the pandemic will be devastating unless innovative education policies are developed.
